Spunlace PE-coated Nonwoven Moisture-Proof Packaging Liner - Bulk Supply for Packaging Manufacturers

What Is a Spunlace PE-Coated Nonwoven Moisture-Proof Packaging Liner?

A spunlace PE-coated nonwoven moisture-proof packaging liner is a composite packaging material made of a hydroentangled (spunlace) nonwoven base with a polyethylene (PE) coating on one side. The nonwoven layer provides tensile strength and a soft, tear-resistant handle; the PE coating adds a continuous moisture barrier. It is used as an inner liner inside cartons, bags, drums, and containers to reduce condensation, humidity ingress, and corrosion risk to packaged goods during storage, warehousing, and transport.

Weston Nonwoven manufactures this liner in bulk rolls and cut sheets, with configurable weight, width, and coating thickness for converters supplying food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, textile, and industrial packaging lines.

How It Works: Spunlace Base + PE Coating

The liner's moisture protection comes from two layers working together:

Spunlace nonwoven base. Fibers are bonded by high-pressure water jets (hydroentanglement) rather than heat or adhesive, producing a fabric that is flexible, low-linting, and resistant to tearing during packing and stacking.

PE coating layer. A polyethylene film is bonded to one face of the nonwoven, forming a continuous moisture barrier. This is what gives the composite its water-resistant and moisture-proof function, measured by WVTR (lower = better barrier).

Lamination compatibility. The uncoated face bonds with standard packaging adhesives, allowing the liner to be laminated to paper, film, or other nonwoven substrates for multi-layer packaging structures.

Core Applications

  • Food packaging liners - inner liners for cartons, trays, and outer boxes protecting dry foods and snacks from humidity and condensation.
  • Pharmaceutical and medical packaging - cartons and outer packs for medicines, devices, and lab supplies where moisture control affects product integrity.
  • Cosmetic and personal care packaging - moisture-resistant inner layer for cosmetic boxes and gift sets to preserve appearance and shelf life.
  • Textile and apparel packaging - placed between folded garments or fabric rolls to reduce moisture-related staining and odor during storage.
  • Industrial and machinery parts packaging - protective liner inside crates and boxes for metal components and tools, reducing humidity-driven corrosion risk.
  • Agricultural and bulk material packaging - barrier layer in seed, fertilizer, and feed packaging to limit moisture exposure and preserve efficacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is spunlace PE-coated nonwoven waterproof or just moisture-resistant?

It is moisture-resistant/moisture-proof rather than fully waterproof in the way a sealed film pouch is. The PE coating blocks vapor transmission and light splashing, but the liner is not designed as a submersion-grade waterproof barrier. For fully waterproof applications, ask about heavier PE coating weights or additional lamination.

What's the difference between PE-coated nonwoven and a plain PE film liner?

PE film alone has strong moisture resistance but low tear strength and tends to puncture under mechanical stress. Adding a spunlace nonwoven base gives the composite tensile strength and puncture resistance while keeping the PE layer's barrier performance, making it better suited to boxes, crates, and bags handled multiple times.

Can this liner be used for tropical or high-humidity climate shipping?

Yes. Higher basis weight and increased PE coating thickness improve barrier performance for high-humidity or long-transit routes. Confirm target WVTR values for your shipping lane with our technical team before specifying a weight.

Can the liner be laminated or printed for branding?

Yes. The uncoated nonwoven face accepts standard packaging adhesives and can be laminated to paper, film, or other nonwoven layers. Custom tints and printed branding like Laminated Nonwoven For Medical Packaging or handling instructions are available on request.

Is this liner recyclable or biodegradable?

The spunlace fiber base can be produced with recycled content, but the PE coating is not biodegradable, so the composite as a whole is not fully biodegradable. Ask about recycled-content variants if sustainability certification is a requirement for your packaging program.
